There is an urgent need to review the existing provisions, to provide better facilities for the elderly, and to change the laws governing their rights as abuse of the elderly is increasingly common, and facilities are limited. When this administration took office in the City of Cape Town in March 2006 the rebates have increased over the past four years which have benefited a large proportion of the financially vulnerable portion of the population.
The upper limit on qualifying household incomes will increase from the current R7000 per month to R8000 per month from 1 July 2009. All income categories below R8000 per month will also benefit by increased rebates, while those with household incomes below R3000 per month will receive a 100% rebate on their rates.
Deadline for existing applications is 31 August 2009. New applicants can apply any time during the financial year up to 30 June 2010 when he/she reaches the age of 60 years (before you had to be 60 years of age by the beginning of the financial year).
For more information on the rates rebates’ scheme and application procedures, please contact 0860 10 30 89 at the City Call Centre or visit any of the walk-in municipal centres. You are also welcome to contact my office on 021 590 1680 for more information or application forms. See below proposed gross monthly household incomes and rebates schedule.
